PERMISSIVE SPACE
YEAR
2023
TYPE OF PROJECT
Documentary/Research
A group is documented discussing a street in Plymouth and the arts policy that affects their work. A few months later, they watch this documentation and analyse their performances. This meeting is also filmed; Permissive Space is an edited version of both sessions. The film is part of my PhD research, where I asks how arts policy affects the public(s) working in Plymouth’s Union Street area.
Through constellation, montage, and feedback, I questions the nature of group interaction and my role as a researcher. I follow Trinh T. Minh-Ha in developing a documentary method that is aware of its own artifice, and in questioning my role as a researcher and position of a single documentary narrative.
